[Bookbinder's Tickets] 1) In black ink on cream paper, the ticket consists of an escutcheon with an elaborate base, bearing the name, services, and location of the company. A diadem bears the crest of a Gryphon salient armed, gules, holding an escutcheon Argent, a garter, gules. The escutcheon is surrounded by smoke-like dark shading and the whole is surrounded by a thin black border. 2) In black ink on light blue or gray paper, the ticket consists of an elaborate coin or medallion with trefoils in the four corners, bearing the name and services of the company. An escutcheon in the center of the medallion bears the address of the business. The blunted corners of the ticket result in an octagonal shape. 2. [Bookplate by Herbert Raine] In black ink on paper with visible fibers and laid lines. Etched image includes recessed borders and boxes surrounding the stylized initials, H R, the name, 'HERBERT RAINE,' and two mirrored images of seahorses. 3. [Bookplate by Owen Staples] In black ink on white paper, a clock is pictured in the top right corner (possibly a grandfather clock), and a table stands in the foreground. On the table there are several items: a framed portrait of a man, a few books, a vase holding some flowers, and a paint palette and some brushes. There is a lyre on either side of the name at the bottom. 4. [Bookplate by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper, depicting a man holding a book and sitting beneath a large tree, with more trees in the background. 5. [Bookplate by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper. Depiction of a sloped road, an inn, and Brock’s Monument, a 56-metre column dedicated to Major General Sir Isaac Brock, a Canadian war hero from the War of 1812. 6. [Bookplate by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper, depicting a satyr playing reed pipes in a field with some flowers, surrounded by wildlife (moose, rabbit, squirrel, beaver, birds). There is a forest and water nearby, and signs of human life (tent, canoe). Pictured within a circular frame, with ribbon and text, and a crow standing on a branch at the very top looking down. 7. [Bookplate for Albert Prince by Dempsey and Carroll] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross, with quarters one and four also divided per cross. Within quarters one and four, the sub-quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with three lions passant guardant (for England). Sub-quarter two is or (gold), with a tressure-flory-counter -flory, charged with a lion rampant (for Scotland). Subquarter three is azure (blue), charged with a harp decorated with harpy figure features, stringed (for Ireland). The entire escutcheon is charged with a bar dovetailed, or a label, a cadency mark indicating being the eldest son (during his father's lifetime). Quarters two and three have a barry of ten, or and sable (black), with a bend in the shape of a ducal crown (without the cap). Surrounding the escutcheon is a garter, with first French motto within. Above the escutcheon is a royal crown. Supporting the escutcheon at dexter is a lion guardant, charged with a label. At sinister is a unicorn rampant, also charged with a label, as well as a royal crown without the cap as a collar. Below the escutcheon is a ribbon, with second German motto within. The entire achievement is surrounded by very fine lines, giving the impression of shadow. 8. [Bookplate for Alice Ravenhill] Heraldic bookplate executed in black ink on white paper. The bookplate consists of a simple shield above which is a ribbon with the motto: "Candide et Constanter" (fairly and firmly). 9. [Bookplate for Benjamin Gott] In black ink. Escutcheon inside a garter on which is the Latin motto. Inescutcheon parted per bend, argent [white], charged with two roses on either side of a lion, passant ; coticed, argent, and charged with three tufts of ermine each, sable [black].Two layer bordure, countercharged, argent and sable. Above the escutcheon is a curved crest wreath on which is a demi-gryphon, displayed. 10. [Bookplate for Blythe Eagles by A. W.] Armorial bookplate created with black ink on white paper. In the precise middle chief is an eagle (created in a First Nations' design) clutching a fish. A purpure chevron with three dogwood flowers is also portrayed. Three university shields are featured: University of Toronto (dexter chief), Yale University (sinister chief), University of British Columbia (nombril point). Below the University of British Columbia's crest are two aulns (single pieces of wheat). 11. [Bookplate for Clifford E. Lee] Black ink on white paper. Text interspersed in seven broken verticle lines. 12. [Bookplate for Collège de Saint-Laurent] In black ink on white paper, at the top of this bookplate one finds a banner bearing the text “BIBLIOTHÈQUE DU COLLÈGE DE SAINT-LAURENT” [French: Library of Saint-Laurent College], below which sits the coat of arms of Quebec. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon Or (gold) on a fess Gules (red) between two fleurs de lis in chief Azure (blue), and a sprig of three leaves of maple slipped Vert (green) in base, a lion passant guardant Or (gold). A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto “JE ME SOUVIENS” [French: I Remember]. On either side of the coat of arms of Quebec are shining five-point stars. Below the coat of arms of Quebec on the left is the coat of arms of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon Azure (blue), charged with a Latin cross, Or (gold), surmounted by two anchors, saltier, Argent (silver). A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto “SPES UNICA” [Latin: Our Only Hope]. To the right of the coat of arms of the Congregation of the Holy Cross appear the words “EX LIBRIS.” Further to the right is a third coat of arms, likely the coat of arms of the Collège de Saint-Laurent. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon party per fess, first party per pale Azure (blue), charged with a Latin cross, Or (gold), surmounted by two anchors, saltier, Argent (silver) ; Gules (red), charged with a feather quill, Argent (silver) ; second Azure (blue), a pale Or (gold). A banner dividing the shield per fess bares the acronym “C. S. L.” A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto of the Collège de Saint-Laurent: “PALMA DE CRUCE” [Latin: Victory by the Cross]. Below the three coats of arms appears a beaver facing left below which rests two crossed branches of sugar maple tied with a ribbon. At the bottom of the bookplate appear the words “MONTRÉAL, CANADA.”. 13. [Bookplate for Collège de Saint-Laurent] In black ink on white paper with a border composed of white/hollow diamonds surrounded by filled/black diamonds at each point. Inside the border appear the words “BIBLIOTHÈQUE / DU / Collège Saint-Laurent / No…..,” indicating a space for a number. The number “8” is written in pencil in this space. 14. [Bookplate for Henry Gilbert Wintle] In black ink. No escutcheon. Straight crest wreath charged with a stag, lodged, proper, on grass, with a three-leaved twig in its mouth. 15. [Bookplate for Henry Young and Alice Young by Joseph Winfred Spenceley] In black ink on beige paper. In the centre, standing on the name plate, is the image of knight crusader, holding with outstretched arms a broad ribbon inscribed with the word "Credo." His Norman pointed shield hangs in front of his sword from a strap at his left hip ; the charges, untinctured, are: barry of five, in canton a leopard contournd. At either side of him rises a large acanthus-like scroll surmounted by a leopard's head ; behind him hangs an arras curtain, draped and knotted at the top. Across the base ripples a ribbon, inscribed "Ex libris Henry and Alice Young." The whole is enclosed in a narrow, formal frame. 16. [Bookplate for Ian Waldie by Alexander Scott Carter] In black ink on white paper, a sailboat at sea with a fish depicted in the waves below. Three seagulls are flying around the boat. A wide, bold floral border surrounds the image of the ship, with a few books and a lyre above it. 17. [Bookplate for J. Harry Smith by William Walker Alexander] Printed in brown ink on cream paper, the bookplate shows a man in the dress of a 19th-century agricultural laborer against a background of clouds and a landscape of fields, trees, and three buildings (possibly a house, a barn, and an out building). The man holds a basket in his left hand and sows seeds with his right hand. In the left foreground, a lamb frolics next to an open book. The right page of the book reads 'LAMB'S / TALES.' Underneath the open book appears a manuscript upon which rests an inkwell and a quill pen. The date '1942' is written in the bottom left corner of the manuscript. To the right of the book appears a mailbox with 'R. R. / 4' written on the door. On the side of the mailbox appear the words 'Knoll Farm / J. HARRY SMITH.' Below and to the right of mailbox appears an inverted triangle with the initials 'W W' at the base of the triangle and the initial 'A' at the top of the triangle. 18. [Bookplate for James M. Wishart by Leslie Victor Smith] Printed in black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a two line border surrounding a circular design of vines and leaves with the words 'EX LIBRIS' appearing at the top. In the upper third of the design at center appears a University of Toronto Medical School coat of arts bearing a skull and crossbones. Below the coat of arm to the left appears an open book and to the right appears a three-stringed harp. The initials of the designer, Leslie Victor Smith, and the date "1940" appear at the bottom of the design. Below the design appears the name of the owner. 19. [Bookplate for James Stevenson by H. Wilson] A Latin phrase is written on a banner at the top of the plate. Beneath it is a hand ascending from a heraldic silk wreath, holding a crown of leaves. While illustrated in a pictorial style, the image is reminiscent of the heraldic image of a dexter hand couped at the wrist, holding a crown of laurel or bay leaves. 20. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name.
